Dr. Best received her PhD in Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley in 2012. Her research asks how policies and laws respond to social problems. She is currently writing a book about the rise of social movements targeting diseases. This work explains why disease advocacy emerged, how it shaped federal medical research politics, and why disease advocates tend to lobby for medical research instead of medical care. After completing the program, she joined the Department of Sociology at the University of Michigan as an assistant professor.
