Neil J. Smelser
is University Professor Emeritus of Sociology at the University of California, Berkeley (1958-1994), and Director Emeritus, Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford (1994-2001). His research has been in the areas of social theory, social change, collective behavior and social movements, comparative methodology, economic sociology, sociology of education, psychoanalysis, and terrorism. He has also served in diverse administrative capacities on the Berkeley campus and in the Office of the President. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, and the National Academy of Sciences, and has served as President of the American Sociological Association. For the past seven years he has been a teacher in the RWJF Scholars in Health Policy Research Program on the Berkeley campus, and a member of its executive committee.
