Dr. Mahoney received his PhD and MA in Economics at Stanford University and his ScB in Applied Mathematics-Economics at Brown University. Dr. Mahoney is also a Faculty Research Fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Dr. Mahoney's conducts research in the fields of public finance and industrial organization and has a particular interest in health insurance markets. His research examined the implicit health insurance households received from the ability to declare bankruptcy, the effects of supplemental Medigap insurance on overall medical utilization, and the efficiency consequences of community-rating regulations. His research has been published in the American Economic Review and Quarterly Journal of Economics and has received coverage in The Economist, New York Times, and Wall Street Journal. He was named a Sloan Research Fellow in 2016. Prior to joining Booth, he has also worked at McKinsey & Company and for the Obama Administration on health care reform.
