Dr. Collins has a PhD from University of Michigan. Beginning September 1, 2017, she will serve as the inaugural Vice Dean of Diversity and Inclusion, Chief Diversity Officer and Associate Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at UT Health Science Center, San Antonio within the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine. Previously she was the Assistant Professor of Medicine within the General Internal Medicine division at John's Hopkins University. She studies racial and ethnic and socioeconomic disparities, translational research and cultural and linguistic competence.

She holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago and a master's degree from the University of Michigan. She also received her PhD from the University of Michigan and held faculty positions at the University of Texas at Austin before joining the Johns Hopkins faculty in 2012. She received the Woodrow Wilson Career Enhancement Fellow Award, and other awards for her work.
